Mini Rugby (U5 – U12)

For ‘Non-Contact Minis’ at U5 to U8, girls and boys train and play together. Parent coaches run the Minis Non-Contact teams, with oversight from our Chairman and Director of Rugby.

For ‘Contact Minis’ at U9 to U12, we run combined U9/U10 and U11/U12 girls teams, and the boys have teams for each year / age group. At this ‘Contact’ age group level we also introduce at least one professional coach from SocGen Valley RFC, where our children can learn up-to-date methods and practices from Hong Kong’s best rugby talents, and the parent coaches begin a (slow!) transition to the background.

All training sessions for U5 to U12 are held on a Sunday morning at various locations in Tai Tam, Aberdeen and Stanley dependent on age group. In addition, the Contact Mini age groups (U9 to U12) also train on a Friday evening from mid October onwards. See the ‘Meet your coaches and training logistics’ section below for further details on your individual age group training time and venue.

The U5 to U11 Mini age groups can participate in up to six festivals (they do not typically play weekly matches) and are normally held on a Sunday once a month from October at various locations across Hong Kong. At U12, the boys and girls teams play in a tournament (instead of festivals). The U12B / Mixed tournament is called The Richard Hawkes Cup and the U12G tournament is called The Kim Lam Cup. There are six rounds of both tournaments and are typically played the same dates as the festivals above.

There are also usually overseas tours which in recent years have taken us to Singapore, Japan and Malaysia, but the highlight of the season is the Hong Kong Sevens held in April each year. During the Sevens some of the children get to play at the Hong Kong Stadium in front of thousands of rugby fans.

Youth Rugby (U13 – U19)

Our Youth rugby run teams at U13, U14, U16 and U19 for Boys, and Youth Girls teams at U14 and U16. Training occurs on Tuesday and Thursday evenings as well as Sunday mornings at Happy Valley. The season is typically split into three main parts:

  • September & October – Training and friendly games
  • November & December – XII’s and XV’s league fixtures
  • January, February & March – X’s and Sevens rugby
  • February & March – Grand Championship knock out tournament

See the ‘Meet your coaches and training logistics’ section below for further details on your individual age group training time and venue.
