The club is split between Minis (U5 to U12) and Colts (U13 to U19). All are determined by year of birth.

Minis (U5 to U12)

Minis is split again between Non-Contact (i.e. no tackling) for U5 to U8, and Contact for U9 to U12.

Girls and boys play/practice together for Non-Contact, although more often than not the Girls choose to have a separate Girls-only team for festivals. But this is usually determined by the Coaches and parents at any given age group.

For Contact Minis, we run U10 and U12 Girls teams, and the Boys have teams for each year.

Colts (U13 to U19)

Colts run teams at U13, U14, U16 and U19 for Boys, and an overall Colts Girls team.

Parent coaches run the Minis Non-Contact teams, with oversight from our Chairman and Director of Rugby.

At Minis Contact age groups, we introduce at least one professional coach from SocGen Valley RFC, where our children can learn up-to-date methods and practices from Hong Kong’s best rugby talents, and the Parent coaches begin a (slow!) transition to the background.

The Laws and Rules differ for each age group, and are subject to change from year to year, but there generally at the younger age groups there are no more than 8 players on a team. This number increases each as the children move to contact, culminating in 15-a-side by the Colts level.

The level of sophistication in terms of line outs, scrums or kicking is also developed slowly over the years.

The idea is to allow children to develop skills first in a safe and fun environment, before more technical or tactical elements are added in their more maturing years.
